THINGS THAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE UCC

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE UCC UNIVERSAL CANE COUNCIL

The UCC was setup nearly 6 Years ago to promote the cane among those with varying disabilities.  It is our belief that those with disabilities know how they want to be taught and how best the cane (walking Stick) best sutes them.

It has taken a very long time to set this up but we are now well on the way and we are adding new members and people with much experience.

We run along side the Cane masters International Association formed By GM Mark Shuey in America.  They do have a UK branch run By Chris Bird.  You can find information on the front page of this website under the appropriate link.

The Grade system within the Council is based on the Japanese Dan System which is used not only for the martial arts but many other activities in Japan.  The term "Cane Master" is NOT I stress NOT the same as used by the Cane Masters International Association at all.  Within the UCC is means that a person has either developed their own system or, the individual is teaching cane to those with a disability.

MEMBERSHIP OF THE UCC

Membership of the Council is completely FREE all we ask is that you are honest and serious about teaching the cane to all people.

To apply for membership you must be at least Shodan (1st Dan)  Teaching a recognised martial art including cane.  Your system will be tested by one or more of the council and if you are turned down for membership you will be told why so that there are no misunderstandings.

The main aim of the UCC is that the cane is taught to all people with disabilities to hopefully bring them in to the martial arts and make a major difference to their life and open many other doors for them.

We also hope to eventually setup a teaching policy based on what people with disabilities want to be taught and the methods that suit them.  This means that able bodied people would need to learn how to teach those who have many differing disabilities.

The UCC was founded and setup by Steve Fyffe during 2004 because he wanted to show how a simple white Stick could be used in the martial arts and to help those with disabilities use an everyday item for self defence and confidence.

He truly believes that the walking stick is the way forward not a thing of the past.
